Many of us have heard of Dave Phillips. He has often appeared in the media about weather and climate. David was employed with Environment Canada’s weather service for over 57 years. In 2024, he transitioned from Senior Climatologist to Climatologist Emeritus. (He says dropping Senior from his title immediately made him feel younger.) His work activities relate to the study of the climate of Canada and to promote awareness and understanding of meteorology. He authored several books, papers and reports, including a book on The Climates of Canada, and two bestsellers: The Day Niagara Falls Ran Dry and Blame It On

Red Fever Appropriately on Reconcilliation Day, this movie described pereceptions of indiginous people over many decades. It mentioned the many professional, local and school sports teams with Indian names, the high fashion designs based on native motifs, the incredible sport success of many athletes, especially Jim Thorpe and the terrible effects of residential schools. Ironically after the movie, we enjoyed a meal at Montanas where a game involving the Atlanta Braves was being broadcast.

A Probus group drove to Stayner for a fun meal then a visit to the Avro Arrow- Edendale Aviation Heritage Foundation on Wednesday, June 15th. 2024. The tour guides started by describing the airport with its many hangers, then three planes outside: an old MIG from Poland, the same plane used by snowbirds, then a rotund airplane used to search for submarines until 1990. David Dunlap Observatory Trip A group of 21 Bolton Probus members went to the David Dunlap Observatory. We had a wonderful time even though it was a rainy miserable night. In the administration building we saw a presentation on the interesting history of the DDO, then about solar observing. Club members peppered the presenters with a lively series of questions. Well behind schedule we went to the dome which houses what was once the second largest optical telescope in the world. An Amazing day at the Brampton Flying Museum Sixteen members made their way this October to the Brampton Flying Club to have lunch together, followed by a most interesting tour through the Great War Museum next door.Thanks to the impressive knowledge of the volunteer guides, Earl in the hanger and Richard in the memorabilia museum, our experience came alive with their captivating stories. The visit commenced with lunch in the RBG Greenhouse Café (which is part of the Visitor Centre) after which we drove the Rock Garden where we strolled through beds of spring flowers and flowering shrubs . We then drove to the Arboretum where the flowering cherry trees were at their magnificent best” before driving back to Bolton”.

Edwards Gardens Tour and Dancing in the Park

This tour will run on a June Tuesday evening with suitable weather. Beautiful Edwards Gardens are on Leslie Street 3 km south of 401. Trails run down to the Don Valley. At 7 PM a live band will start playing Scottish tunes and Scottish Country Dancers enjoy different dances including many audience participation ones when spectators are encouraged to join in the fun.

Nicole has been with SHIP for 14 years and currently works as Manager of Central Intake and Access Team. Our Bolton Probus excursion to Little Canada was a huge success. It met our expectations and more; as we went on our journey of discovery through a vast, highly detailed, animated miniature representation of parts of Canada. We started at Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the Lake, Union Station, Distillery District, Parliament Building with every fifteen minute Canada celebration, Chateau Frontenac, Hamilton and Ottawa….watching the colorful miniature people, boats, canoes, cars, trains, animals and construction equipment in action. As the lighting grows dim about every half hour the street lights come on and give off a wonderful glow. We especially gravitated to the hyper-realistic

In our November 2022 meeting, the Bolton and District Probus Club had the pleasure of welcoming Geoff Hayes, a professor of history at the University of Waterloo. Professor Hayes provided the Club with an engaging presentation on Vimy Ridge, the battle and the myth. His presentation drew from the book, Vimy Ridge: A Canadian Reassessment.
