Barbara will share a lively and engaging talk about sanitary sewers, the most important infrastructure in any City. She will discuss the state-of-the-art best practices for sewer systems in Canada (which she developed), and how municipalities are falling short of making our sewer and water bills affordable through inaction.
She will share information about your own sewer, how to operate and maintain it, and simple best practices to substantially reduce the risk of basement flooding at your home. She will share her newest research finding (2023) – women’s toilet stalls are not required to contain trash cans – meaning tonnes of deleterious products are being flushed across Canada every day, for want of this
basic woman’s need in a stall. Be sure to remind her to tell you how to prevent rats from getting into your house through your sewer (true story).
Norton’s body of work of best practices for sewers, developed over the past 10 years, can reduce the flow in sewers (peak and average) by 30 to 50%, depending on the system. This can be done efficiently and cost-effectively, using existing regulations. She is working with Ontario and Federal government colleagues and politicians to bring this to fruition. This will provide substantial climate change mitigation, reduce flooding, reduce costs and significantly improve the environment.
