Katie Sawyers was the guest presenter at our Thursday September 12th meeting. She is the coordinator Age-Friendly Caledon Project Lead and Human Services for the Town of Caledon for the last 8 years.
Katie gave us an overview of the Age Friendly Caledon Action Plan 2021-2031. Currently, 16 % of the Caledon population is over 65. The main focus goal of the plan is envisioning a safe, welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates the diverse needs of all residents, regardless of age. She presented an historical timeline of progress to date from 2015 to 2024. The main goal of the Age-Friendly Plan is to have a complete community where people work and come to build their families and older Community Engagement. She shared some information with us about each of these priorities.
Katie outlined the five goals of the Age-Friendly Caledon Action Plan. These are:
- To remove barriers that limit participation among persons aged 55+.
- To improve and update programs that address changing needs of Caledon residents.
- To engage Healthy Ageing for all residents.
- To strengthen partnerships between the town and local service providers and agencies which support the needs of residents.
- To allocate necessary resources and support an aging demographic.
She also discussed the AFC ongoing activities, the progress to date and planned strategies that are currently underway.
She concluded her presentation with: Where do we go from here? We as residents are encouraged to help build a more welcoming, inclusive and barrier-free community. We can do this by staying active, getting involved, being inclusive and make a difference!
