AGING IN PLACE
Are you aware of a charitable organization called HelpAge Canada which focuses on the health and wellness of seniors and works to be the voice of older people in Canada?
At the Bolton and District Probus January meeting Professor Raza Mirza who is the Director of National Partnerships for HealthAge Canada spoke about how the Home Share program is enabling seniors to remain in their homes safely, independently, and comfortably. even when financial concerns might prevent them from doing so,
After careful screening and credit checks two people are paired based on algorithms. Often the combination is a senior who is the home owner and a student who requires accommodation. An agreement is reached between the two individuals stating the rental fee and other considerations such as the student providing assistance in caring for the home and property, and the sharing of meals. Partnerships can also be between two seniors.
The benefits for the homeowner are financial assistance, inter-generational engagement, increased connectedness, and a sense of safety and security. The renter finds affordable accommodation in an increasingly expensive rental market The contract can be a four month, eight month, or twelve month duration. Professor Mirza suggested starting with a four month period. If at the end of this time the arrangement is not working out there is a pool of forty to fifty names and another connection can be made.
