A Probus group drove to Stayner for a fun meal then a visit to the Avro Arrow- Edendale Aviation Heritage Foundation on Wednesday, June 15th. 2024.
The tour guides started by describing the airport with its many hangers, then three planes outside: an old MIG from Poland, the same plane used by snowbirds, then a rotund airplane used to search for submarines until 1990.
Then we went into the hanger with a full scale model of the Arrow. On Feb. 20, 1959 the project was cancelled. For some reason all models whch had been flown many time and plans were also destroyed by government order. This model of sheet metal was made by people who worked on the original Arrow.
This picture by Ian Kittle shows an engine beside the tail of the Arrow. The Arrow had two engines and could break the sound barrier going up.
This picture shows the Probus group plus the tour guides in front of what was the best fighter in the world at the time. It had many innovations developed by Canadian engineers. Many who lost their jobs worked on the Apollo program to land people on the moon.
