The guest speakers at our April meeting were Nicole Abruscato and Tonya Salomans. Both of these individuals are registered social workers and work for Services and Housing in the Province (SHIP). Nicole has been with SHIP for 14 years and currently works as Manager of Central Intake and Access Team. Nicole started the presentation by describing the SHIP organization and the service that is offered to its clients. One of the goals is to assist individuals to reach their full potential by integrating housing with a health services delivery model. The team works to support those with mental health and addiction challenges. The core values of their delivery model are compassion, hope, inclusion, respect, professionalism, confidentiality and privacy. SHIP provides services to help meet the needs of each individual. The organization has a staff of 450 professionals. There is a total of 1200 housing units with a current wait list of over 2000 people.
Tanya has been with SHIP since February 2019. She currently works in short-term case management as a Community Mental Health Counsellor for the Health and Wellness Programs. She is passionate about housing and mental health support and works from a critically reflective and anti-oppressive stance. Tanya’s presentation focused on Mental Health awareness and wellness. At times we all experience different mental health levels. Mental illness presents itself on a continuum.
- 1 in 5 Canadians will experience mental illness or addiction.
- 1 out of 5 people will have had a mental illness by age 40.
- Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in Canada.
- Mental illness can impact live expectancy by 10-20%.
- People with mental illness are two times more likely to have substance abuse concerns.
Stressors can increase the risk of mental health. It is important to have activities and interests that help to decrease the stressors in your life. It is important to take time for yourself and keep involved and connected.
The presentation was well received by our Probus Club.
